First impressions are everything so ensure your first impression is a good one. Initially you will learn what your clients needs are through your agencies prep and your own assessment. You will receive direct instructions on what you need to do as well as instructions from your client or family member which is optional. You play an important role in your clients daily routine so ensure your mindful of all the instructions. Take the time to understand your clients needs and become comfortable with being in the same area as them. Ask questions if you feel the need to and ensure you understand daily routine, preferences, and other special requirements. This will help both you and the client enjoy the day safely.
Keep emergency information in sight and enter phone numbers and contact information into you phone. Talk to family members that are available if you need the clarification or call the your manager to clarify or gather more information so you can feel confident. Never act in uncertainty. Monitor the environment you will be working in for tripping hazards and safety concerns. Check for lightbulbs out, gas stove on, outlets unsealed, broken walls, broken floors, or other people that are unsafe. These would be something to report to your manager if deemed unsafe. Clear away any tripping hazards and make any other adjustment you feel you need to for your clients mobility like books or boxes on the floor that can be moved.
Help out as much as needed. Help with basic hygiene including bathing, grooming, and oral care. Encourage independent tasks as much as possible. Encourage hydration if there is no regular schedule and prep all meals accordingly. You are a non medical caregiver meaning you cannot administer medication or do anything else that is deemed a medical procedure. Ensure you are helping with the organization and helping with the pill organizers where the medications are kept. Monitor the individual for changes and needs. Report any and all concerns to healthcare professionals. Report any changes in environment or care plan through our company app while taking the daily survey.
When spending time with the individual, engage in conversations, play games, or participate in activities they enjoy. Facilitate opportunities for social interaction with family friends, outings, or other events like sightseeing. Taking drives to see the town or a park while staying in the car is also a great option.
Practice great self care and understand your limits. To avoid burn out and losing yourself to a lack of work life balance that can affect your mental health and mood.
