Personal care aides or caregivers are in demand with the job outlook at 21% which is much faster than average. An estimated 718,900 new jobs are expected to be created every year for the next ten years. These numbers make sense because according to the census the senior population is growing. (Home Health and Personal Care Aides 2024) According to the census.gov the projected number is up from 58 million in 2022 to 82 million in 2050. That is a massive increase of 47 percent. Caregivers are defined as professionals who deliver care to people who require it. Caregivers do a many number of tasks on a daily basis. Tasks in the basic hygiene category include hands on bathing, assistance with tub or shower. Also assistance with toileting, brushing teeth, brushing hair, trimming nails, and all other morning or evening routine tasks. Cooking tasks include meal preparation, feeding, and shopping for food items. Caregivers can also run errands outside of the home such as pickup prescriptions and groceries. Light house keeping tasks include cleaning after meals and maintaining home cleanliness. Also cleaning, mail, and laundry. Assistance with managing the individual’s home and handling personal affairs. Non-Medical caregivers can help self administer drugs but cannot administer drugs. Finally all hands-on assistance with activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living.
Caregiver requirements include CPR certification, valid drivers license, and HHA certification, certification by an agency, DSP certification, or having certification by an accredited online school or in person school. This normally requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Many caregivers continue their education to become STNA or nurses with caregiving experience being the entry to providing care.
Turnover rates for caregiver are very high. In 2023 the turnover rate was 79.2 percent for caregivers. According to the same report four out of five caregivers turnover within the first 100 days on the job. Both of these statistics are from the 2024 Activated Insights Benchmarking Report.
